How to read the crypto fear & greed index - and why greed is a warning sign

Sentiment · 10/11

What is the fear & greed index?

It's a score from 0 to 100 that shows whether traders are scared right now (fear) or getting carried away (greed). It's usually split like this:

Score Zone
0–20 Extreme fear
20–40 Fear
40–60 Neutral
60–80 Greed
80–100 Extreme greed

Why read it in reverse?

As the saying goes, "be fearful when others are greedy." When everyone is excited, most of the people who wanted to buy have often already bought. And when everyone is scared, most of the people who wanted to sell may have already sold.

So the fear & greed index works better as a thermometer that tells you whether the market is overheated or cooling off, rather than a signal that predicts direction.

Every day, we turn the mood of Korean crypto communities into a score from 0 to 100. Alongside the score, you can see how much it changed since yesterday.

How to use it

  • In extreme greed, rather than opening a big new position, think about taking some profit on what you already hold.
  • Watch how the score changes. If it swung from fear to greed in just a few days, the mood heated up fast.
  • Don't decide on sentiment alone - check it alongside whale long/short and the liquidation map.
