A Bitcoin liquidation map shows the price levels where leveraged BTC positions would be force-closed. Since liquidations push price even further, knowing where they sit helps you prepare for where a pump or dump could suddenly speed up.
Why liquidations move price
When a position is liquidated, the exchange closes it with a market order - immediately, at whatever price is available.
- Long liquidation → a forced sell → price drops further.
- Short liquidation → a forced buy → price rises further.
If that forced order pushes price into the next liquidation level, the same thing happens again. That chain reaction is why moves can turn violent around crowded levels.
Telling long and short liquidations apart
It's all about position relative to the current price:
- Liquidation volume below the current price belongs to longs. It triggers if price falls.
- Liquidation volume above the current price belongs to shorts. It triggers if price rises.
A short squeeze is simply a big pile of short liquidations getting hit one after another on the way up. A long squeeze is the same thing on the way down.
A pre-trade checklist
- Is there a big liquidation cluster near your stop-loss? Slippage can be worse there. Consider placing your stop just in front of it.
- Is there a big wall on the wrong side of your trade? If you're going long and there's a large long liquidation wall just below price, even a small dip can snowball.
- Can you use less leverage? Lower leverage gives your position more room to survive a fast move near crowded levels.
- Is the map changing? Walls appear and disappear as traders open and close positions. Re-check close to your entry.
A liquidation map doesn't tell you which way price will go. It shows where a move can get bigger. Nothing here is financial advice or a promise of returns.
Reading it on WhaleCue
The WhaleCue liquidation map groups only the liquidation prices of Bitcoin whales holding large positions, so the walls you see reflect where big money is exposed. When a large wall forms close to the current price, the map flags it as a "liquidation warning" or "liquidation risk." Open it before you place a leveraged trade - it takes a few seconds.
